In this fun, one-day, exploratory workshop beginning and continuing students will explore new ways of expanding their creative practice through the magic of mosaics.

Workshop will focus on the use of glass and mirror, highlighting the use of materials commonly used in contemporary mosaic art, as well as on unusual, unexpected, and unique materials, used in surprising ways.

Students will learn how to work with a variety of materials to create an abstract mosaic piece to take home for interior display. Design inspirations will be offered and a selection of prepared mosaic surfaces will be provided.

I’ll offer lessons in the correct use of glass mosaic tools and present a variety of techniques for cutting and shaping glass and mirror to achieve interesting effects. Students will

get a chance to practice cutting with think and thick glass, irregular and textured materials, and glass with various surface qualities.

We’ll consider the studio our laboratory for the day and explore principles of abstract mosaic design including contrast, shape and form, pattern, and use of color and texture. We’ll investigate how the juxtaposition of different materials can create dazzling effects, and explore innovative uses of humble materials, and unorthodox uses of fancy materials.

Students will gain an understanding of contemporary mosaic setting techniques, while being encouraged to experiment. I’ll offer one-on-one guidance and lot’s of encouragement.

There will be an inspiring array of cool materials for students to experiment with including:

Colored and textured glass and mirror in a variety of thicknesses, glass shapes and gems, stained glass, painted and fused glass, vitreous glass, iridescent and metallic glass, window glass, slag glass, recycled glass, and Italian and Mexican smalti… and whatever else I bring in from my travels. Surprises!

I’ll demonstrate the use of different adhesives including clear silicone adhesive and tinted mortar beds. Both adhesives allow for interesting textural effects. No grouting!

Students will have ample time for creative exploration in a supportive group setting, and come away with a strong knowledge base to apply to future projects.

This workshop is great for students of all experience levels.
No previous mosaic or art experience necessary. Come as you are.
